# Construction Cleaning for an Occupied Hospital Expansion in Texas

An occupied hospital expansion needs phased containment, documented routes, terminal-area handoffs, and cleaning crews coordinated with infection-control and commissioning teams. Here is how Texas GCs can plan the work before turnover week.

## Occupied healthcare work starts with separation

Construction cleaning for an occupied hospital expansion must protect active patient and staff areas while preparing new space for inspection, commissioning, and turnover. The plan begins with containment, controlled movement, negative-pressure or other project-specific controls, and clearly defined clean and dirty routes before final cleaning starts.

The project infection-control plan, owner requirements, and contractor procedures are the authority for each site. Cleaning crews need those requirements during onboarding, not during the final week.

## Define the zones and handoffs

A single building can contain active care, construction, commissioned, and turnover-ready zones at the same time. Each zone needs an owner, access rule, cleaning standard, and acceptance point so completed work is not recontaminated by another trade.

- —Document construction entrances, elevators, corridors, and debris routes
- —Separate tools and consumables used in active and construction areas
- —Coordinate overhead, wall, floor, and casework cleaning with trade completion
- —Protect completed rooms until inspection and owner acceptance
- —Record deficiencies and recleaning responsibility at every handoff

## Run cleaning as a phased trade

Progress cleaning controls debris while work is active. Rough cleaning follows heavy construction and prepares rooms for detail work. Final cleaning addresses every specified surface after trade punch. The last pass happens only after traffic is controlled and the GC confirms the room is ready for turnover.

This sequence keeps the project from spending final-clean labor on spaces that are still producing dust, sealant debris, packaging, or ceiling-grid work.

## Build documentation into the schedule

The cleaning plan should identify who signs off, what photographs or checklists are required, which rooms need special procedures, and how rejected areas return to the schedule. Daily coordination between the superintendent, infection-control stakeholders, commissioning team, and cleaning lead prevents a small access change from becoming a turnover delay.

Segur Cleaning supports phased hospital and large-project construction cleaning across Texas with scalable crews, documented procedures, and scheduling built around the GC and owner handoff plan.
